Hey hey hey everyone! I hope that everyone is still alive up there with this
cold weather that has hit there. Sounds like it has been getting down to zero
even. I cannot remember the last time that happened. I wonder why we are having
such extreme weather these last couple years I have been gone. Like it goes from
one extreme to the other, and it's just wacko. Anyway, it sounds like it is
winter there. Everyone is just working, and trying to keep warm.
Dad, Brett, and Tyler went out with some of the kids ice fishing it sounded
like. That had to have been fun even though you guys got skunked. Ha. Dad sounds
like he is going to try to hit up some other areas he has not been to in years.
He we go, the old man pulling something out of his sleeve. Anyway, I was
thinking you should call up Mike and get him out there to. I bet that the old
man is dying to get out there and get the old line wet.
I can't forget I have to tell you guys, this week I made home made chocolate
chip cookies a couple of times. I did not even have to eat any to bring back the ole'
home cooking days. When I put the first batch in the oven I knew that I had done
a good job! The only thing is is that I don’t have that many chocolate chips, so
I have to conserve them. I made some with peanut nut m&ms. they turned out
perfect! I ate a couple only because I am trying to prevent from being the fat
American here. The only way you fit in is to be skinny and have a good accent so
I am sticking to that plan. I kept making cookies and feeding them to Marcio and
Marizar, the awesome couple that we live with. They ate and ate and ate….ha. In
the end it seemed like I had everyone and their dog asking me for the recipe,
but I told them it was a secret Gatten thing. Mom and Dad will have the
opportunity to meet the people I live with because they will be driving us
around and showing us all the waterfalls, and giving us the Real tour. Yes dad, I
know I am getting it all hooked up for your sweet trip to the Amazon.
This week was awesome for me to say the least. The weeks seem to be getting
progressively better. Like one week I think wow that was amazing everything I
experienced, the spirit I felt and the family that we found, but then I find
another cool family, and have sweeter things happen. I love the work. The key is
to always be animated, always be happy. It is easy to get used to things and do
what you’re comfortable with. It’s all about getting out of your box. We marked
two more baptisms for this next week. It is an awesome little kid and his older
sister. Their mother is not a member, but she knows that she has to support her
children in their righteous decision to follow the Lord. It was really touching
the other night when we were teaching them, and their mom was coming to tell us
if she would give them permission to be baptized because they still live under
her roof, and we said the final prayer and Melina the girl started balling in
the prayer. She prayed that her mom could see into her heart and permit her to
be baptized. I don’t think there was a dry eye. So yes she permitted and their
baptisms are next week.
We brought a couple families to church this last Sunday. They had previously
gone, so they knew more or less how things were run. So Cristiano was called to
be the president of our gospel principles class, so he loved it. Usually he is
shy, but he totally got up and took control, picked a hymn he did not even know,
and chose someone to say the prayer. I could already see his growth. Then in
priesthood he was sitting by my side, and he leaned over and told me how good he
feels in the church, and how much he loved the people. He finished by asking me
what he had to do for him and his wife to be baptized. Can you believe that?! We
will have there wedding sometime soon, but we are still working with Madrilène
his wife because she is trying to quit smoking…bummer. The other couple loved
church too. So these are just a couple fruits of my labor. I feel the Lords hand
in this work here in Laranjeiras. I love the people and I just strive to serve
them. I even played football with investigators again today. It is such a great
way to get people converted. Tell President Wood he is a knuckle head for taking
stake sports away.
I know that this gospel is true. Our burden is light, just share the gospel. I
love the opportunity I have to just open my mouth and preach the gospel as a
representative of our savior Jesus Christ. How blessed we are to have the
knowledge we do of the Savior and His eternal plan he has for us. Many people
walk thoughtless. They don’t know why they are here and they don’t know their
purpose. How blessed we are to know ours. Open your mouth that they can one day
come to know these same things. I love this work, I love it with all my heart,
wither I am a missionary or not I will always work to bring the light of the
gospel into others lives. I love the Lord, I love you all. Thank you for
everything!
Have an amazing week, and don’t forget keep your head up and stand for what you
believe in.

Noah Morton is such a fun grandson!  He is so curious about his world and always thinking.  He loves to see how things are made and how things go.  He creates beautiful things and especially loves to make paper air planes and cut snowflakes.  Soccer and basball are fun for him but he really loves camping and fishing and can hardly wait to go hunting with his dad. A great friend and cousin, he loves playing with them and is such a kind, sweet boy.  I love his hugs! His family Tyler,Mikin, Kiah,Ella, and especially his brother  Asa are sure glad he is in their family.

Cade is ...TWO....Cute!

Brynne and Jon gave Cade the greatest birthday gift,  having  little brother Jay ON his second birthday..Yep...the very same day!  He is such a boy.  He loves all kinds of balls as you see.  Cade loves Zoey his dog and spends as much time as he can out doors, much like his mom and dad. He started learning to swim, helped his mom with her deer, enjoys playing with cousins, and is learning to share with his new  little brother. He likes drawing footballs, singing songs, knows his colors and loves books.  What a joy he is to his family.

AJ's birthday was the 20th.  He is in Utah right now and celebrated with us while he was here for a visit. He and Jean had a birthday party while the family was together.  He hadn't been able to be home for the giant chocolate cake for several years so it was a treat for him. Aj, as you can see from this years pictures is a great friend and brother.  I really enjoyed him being home this summer to help with all the canning. We are all really proud of him.

Ellen Nikell Gatten Jan. 25, 1994

Nikell is our first granddaughter and our first grandchild.  We have done a lot of cool things together this year.  Here you can see her swimming in the pool, fishing at the big hole river in Mt., attending her siblings soccer games, playing on the computor with friends, hanging out with cousins, going on a trek with Papa and Nana Gatten, back packing with her family, out to dinner with all the "adults", and making cookies for us all.  She is full of love and as sweet as he is beautiful.  She has started high school this year and is a cheerleader.  Soon she will be in drivers Ed., I can't imagine!  We are so pleased with her progress in the Young Women's program at church and with the close relationship she has with her parents, Brett and Angie, and her siblings, Wyatt and Sophia.  Nikell is a treasure whom we love so dearly.  Happy birthday "Nikers."

Jan 21, 09 Elder Spike

Hello ladies and gentlmen!!!

So it is like the first official day that the world is under the reign of Obama. Lord save us all. Ha! You know that I am all just totally joking. I was able to see part of his presentation yesterday on the television. It was like inevitable as I walked in the street, because everyone and their dog was watching it! I saw his nice little speech he gave, and him saying goodbye to Bush, and whatever. It was sure neat to see history in the making no matter what it is. I think in years from now I will be able to tell my children that I was able to see mankind at its finest, putting the world in the hands of a African American. The first in the history. It is crazy that people think it is so horribly bad, but really it is not. I agree we need change, we need to improve, and I hope that that is the case. I just think that now is about the hardest it has ever been for the man. Now he has to make his words work. He is not just saying what the people want to hear but now has to do what they expect. There is a long hard road ahead of him, and the world.
This week has been sweet. I was able to see the pictures of Jay. That is awesome! He is without a doubt a cutie. I am so happy so see him after the scare they had also. That has to be one of the scariest moments of a parents life for sure. I am so glad that everything worked out and that he is here now. He is styling by the way. I saw some of the outfits that Brynne has for him and he looks like a pimp. I love him already. I tell people how many nieces and nephews that I have and they cannot believe it. They are not used to the big families here. Way to go Brynne!
My week was packed with things to do. I have been running everywhere and doing everything. Last week we had a ward baptism that we had to do. The man asked us to do it all, so that was definitely a lot of work. After we had our activity for the ward. We went and handed out pass along cards. It was another success, and really is helping the spirit of member missionary work in the ward. Then we received a new ward missionary leader, so we had a planning and training meeting with him. We came up with a couple sweet ideas to get everyone excited about the work. We are working with a program and making a ward news letter weekly. It includes everything that is going on, baptisms, pictures, and the first week our biographies. It will definitely help us gain the confidence of the members even alittle more and help us baptize even more. I think that it is a great idea. Then we went to a families house that we are teaching and painted their house! It was a fun project! It really showed the family that we are here not just to baptize people only but to help people, to serve. It was really touching to see their gratitude. I told the women brynne had her baby too and she is making me print a picture off the internet and show her. She is eight months pregnant.
We are teaching tons of people right now. We have three families in particular that we are teaching that are really progressing and making visits on Sunday, and are totally reading in the book of mormon, and doing family prayer and stuff. It is so AWESOME to see their progress. Like from our first visit with the first vision, to the other day when we are on our knees with them teaching them how to have family prayer. We are working on marking marriage dates for each couple, and the baptisms for them and their children. So yes there is a ton of stuff going on right now here. I am so busy so that is what counts right. We also have a baptism this week, on Saturday. It is a young women age girl that really has a will to be baptized. She has been going to church for months but I never knew that she was not a member. Anyways, that will be great this weekend.
Tonight I have a correlation meeting with the bishop and other presidents of the different organizations. We are really looking at implementing some sweet things to animate the ward. I am looking forward to it. The bishop works so much. Like on Sundays we do visits and stuff, he is truly someone who fulfills his callings. He is an example or how I wan t to work in the church when I head home.
This morning I rounded up a couple investigators and we went and played football, and soccer at a public area. It was super fun. I had the chance to teach everyone how to play football, and I was impressed that some of the Brazilians had good hands. They hated that I was wearing my jersey from argentina. Ha ha. I use it just to get them all mad. Ha. But anyways it is a good way to work out and feel good. I love kicking my butt, and being sore. I feel like I am alive.
I have such a testimony that this is the Lords work. I have such a testimony that the Lord is watching over each of us. I think that if you’re a parent how much you wish that your children have everything they would ever want etc. Then, I think that the God is our Father also, and I think that we don’t even know how much he loves us. He loves us, he want to talk to us. That is how I know that is is there, he is blessing me. I am so humbled by the many blessings that I receive. I realize also that I am not perfect, and the lord blesses me anyways. He shows mercy, love, compassion, and eternal kindness. I am so grateful for the knowledge that I have that he lives. My Savior Jesus Christ exists and lives also. There are so many people in the world who do not have this knowledge. Sometimes I think why me. Why have I been blessed. What a question. I love you all. Thank you for your love and prayers. Know that I am good, but just waiting your letters!

Jan. 14, 09 Spike man

> Ola! What is up family, friends, future family, and everyone else? It has been a wonderful week, full of just about everything. Up in gods country it sounds like it is really warming up, for now that is. The beautiful snow that has fallen and broken records is about gone. That’s the pits huh! At least you have snow right?! Be grateful you little bugers! Besides that is seems like life is the same, going by fast, and things catching us by surprise….but it is worth living isn’t it?
> Ladies and gentlemen the story of the week has to be my sister Brynne! She is super pregnant and is just waiting for a open space in the hospital It sounds like! I am so excited for her! There is not that many things I believe that are more exciting than welcoming a new child of our heavenly father into the world and into your home. I am praying for you brynnee! Ha ha.
> This week has been awesome for me. Sunday we had our baptisms, and they went really well. We had received a new missionary leader in the ward so he was there to support us and to carry everything out. The spirit was so strong during the program. Yet again I know that without a doubt this church is the only true church on the face of the earth. I had the opportunity to baptize too, and It was such an honor. I say it over and over again, but watching people who have become your friends enter into the waters of baptism is such a blessing. You feel like you really are fulfilling your purpose, and that your heavenly father is pleased with you. I am so thankful for the guidance of the holy ghost and the comfort it gives me. I love the gospel and the time I have to spend every second of everyday sharing it with those who need it most. What a calling and blessing. We are teaching a couple families now who are progressing a ton and ironically they are neighbors. It is awesome seeing them grow and learn to keep the commandments.
> The ward moved from the stake building to our rented shop for church this week too. Saturday we went there and cleaned it and got it ready. For some reason on Sunday I felt the spirit stronger than I have ever recently in the other nice big chapel. It built my testimony that it is not a matter of where you are, or how nice of a building your in, but the state of your heart, and the closeness to the spirit. I love the chance I have every week to renew my covenants with my heavenly father and to become clean yet again as in my baptism so many years ago.
> Saturday, we gave out a ton of pass along cards again. That is something that we are keeping a habit of here in our ward. We go out every Saturday and give everyone twenty cards and they go and give them to everyone and spread the gospel. I t is awesome cause It gives us people to teach. It truly blesses us, but most importantly blesses the members lives too. The lord has so many promised blessings for those who will work in this great cause. I love sharing the gospel. Just think when is the last time you did? Get on it. Grab a card….like my president always tells me, your never just buying bananas..ha!
> I know that this gospel is true. I know that we have a loving heavenly father and we are his children. Jesus Christ lives, and is our savior and redeemer. Joseph smith restored the true church that Christ established so many years ago; its perfect. The book of mormon is the word of god. Families can be together forever. What a blessing this knowledge is. Have an awesome week. Pray for missionary experiences. But faith without works is dead so get out there, make something happen.

Elder G 2009!!!

d I know. We rolled in the New Year and made it to live another day. It is hard to believe that it is 2009 isn’t it? I feel like I just graduated and came on the mission, but that was in 07'. I guess that you could say time flies when you’re having fun, or in another country learning how to be someone better. I hope that this last year was awesome for each on of you. Experienced things unforgettable, and became a better person…or so we hope! But here we are, a new year a new chance a new time to work onward and upward. I remembered of the goals that we made at home growing up as we rolled in every upcoming year. At the time I did not think much of it, it was boring to admit, but now it really had come to importance. At the beginning of the mission I had written down fifty goals that I wanted to accomplish while here on the lord´s errand. To this date I have accomplished thirty eight of them. I am so grateful for the lesson that mom and dad taught me regarding the importance of making goals, because it has really blessed my life. I have accomplished things that I would have never thought of if I had not written it down. I was able to make plans to accomplish goals, and work, sweat, and yes bleed to accomplish them. Goals keep me on track, and keep me from becoming satisfied. We need to continue to improve everyday. Take advantage of the now and not look too far into the future. If we do we can accomplish a lot. Oh ya, one thing that I don’t like about the New Year though is that you become a year older!
This last week has been great for me. I have been working a ton here in the area, and am learning everyday. We are really finding some good people to teach from member references. That has to be about the best way to baptize I have come to find out from experience. When members and missionaries work together with the spirit they can make miracles happen….remember that. We purify ourselves and subject ourselves to the will, timing, and placement of the lord; he will bless us beyond belief. So we had a sweet activity in our area this last Saturday also. We invited the members to our area to pass out pass along cards, and it turned out to be a great thing. We received a lot of references, and have new people to contact and teach! We have also done this in a couple other areas for other elders, and it really blesses the work. We are doing it now every Saturday, just switching areas. Also, we have a couple more baptisms this week. It should be really awesome. But ya, the zone and district is doing great, and we are baptizing. I love the work, the lord is blessing us so much, and at sometimes I wonder why. Why does he love me so much? Is he really looking after me in my little area? I am so humbled by the hand of the Lord in my life. The least I can do is be a profitable servant.
I received a football from Katelyn for Christmas. It is like a pro style leather sweet ball. It is like really awesome! So I went with my comp to the center of Manaus to the chapel there with other elders and members and played. Soccer too. It was so fun to get out there and gun the ball and make a nice spiral. We ended up getting a little ruff, and some elders drew blood on the pavement. It was stinking sweet. I am definitely a competitive person, and I love sports. I can’t get enough of it! The weeks just don’t seem to pass by fast enough, so everyday I kick my butt doing exercises. Loving it even though it’s not easy. I have become pro on the jump rope. Ha ha.
I love you guys though. I hope your all healthy and happy living the gospel and fulfilling your callings. I love the lord, and this work. There is nothing better I could do at this moment; I know that, it’s a fact. The lord has a plan for me and for you. Just place your life in his hands, he will do the rest. Love you all, and I look up to each of you.
Yours,
Elder Gatten

HAPPY BIRTHDAY NANA & MOM!

Paying tribute to the most amazing Mom and Nana on her birthday. We love you so much... and feel your love for us. We love visiting your house in Dalton, but especially love when you come and visit us, and we get one-on-one time with you! Some of our recent favorites:
  • Love that you will "let loose" with your kids! Had so much fun with you in Vegas for "Girls Week"!
  • Loved having you in St. Louis for the birth of our 3rd baby boy, Beckett. You have always been so loving and helpful during your baby visits each time, but I loved have you there to comfort me, and share in this experience with me. I HATE this picture of me, but love it of you, and how it shows your love and concern for me!

  • Cooper LOVES his Nana! He loves that you will play baseball with him. He loves Nana Sandwiches! :)

  • Gunner loved the time we had to play before Beckett came. He loved the zoo, and bowling at America's Incredible Pizza Co. You are so sweet to make sure each of your grandchildren feel special and loved.

  • How neat that Beckett will always know you were there to welcome him in to this world! Love that he was named after your Dad, Leo, and hope he can learn all the amazing qualities you learned from him as well!

Happy Birthday! Wish we were there to help celebrate with you, and can't wait to see you again!
